NHL Game Summary - Washington at Edmonton
(Saturday, December 19th)
Final Score: Washington 4, Edmonton 2
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Alex Ovechkin scored two of Washington's four goals in the third period, as the Capitals recorded a 4-2 come-from-behind win over Edmonton.
Tomas Fleischmann was credited with the game-winner while Nicklas Backstrom also tallied for the Capitals, who split their four-game road trip.
Michal Neuvirth made 26 saves in the win, Washington's first in Edmonton since February 7, 1996, a span of seven straight games.
"I'm not happy how I played today," said Ovechkin. "I scored two goals but still but it's not my game and it's not what I want to see how my line plays. First two periods we looked awful, we looked terrible, but sometimes the coach gives you a hard time and you just wake up and realize that enough is enough and you have to be better."
Shawn Horcoff and Andrew Cogliano each scored for the Oilers, losers of three straight. Jeff Deslauriers made 38 saves in a losing effort.
Deslauriers turned aside 16 Washington shots in the first period and eight in the second. The same couldn't be said for the final stanza, as Ovechkin made it a one-goal game just 32 seconds in.
Six minutes later, Deslauriers stopped Ovechkin's slapper from just above the right circle but let the superstar clean up his rebound, which tied things.
"He's the best player in the league and you have to take away his time and space and we did a good job for 40 minutes, but we just sort of let off the gas and he started of take over," said Edmonton defenseman Steve Staios.
After not scoring on a two-man advantage midway through the third, Fleischmann's one-timer from the high slot beat the goaltender above his left shoulder for the go-ahead goal with 6:47 left in regulation.
Backstrom added an insurance goal with 3:41 remaining off another rebound, and Neuvirth stopped all 10 shots he faced in the frame to seal the win.
After a scoreless opening stanza, Horcoff got Edmonton on the board just 1:05 into the second by stuffing in a rebound off a Patrick O'Sullivan shot.
Cogliano's bad-angle wrister from the corner somehow snuck through Neuvirth's pads with 3:18 remaining in the middle period for a 2-0 lead.
It was Ovechkin's eighth multi-goal game of the season. He also had an assist...Backstrom has eight goals in his last 10 games...Edmonton has lost five straight at Rexall Place.
