NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Phoenix

(Saturday, October 10th)

Final Score: Columbus 2, Phoenix 0

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Rick Nash scored, while Mathieu Garon stopped all 36 shots for the shutout, as the Columbus Blue Jackets took a 2-0 win over Phoenix in the Coyotes' home opener.

Garon's shutout is his first of the season and 15th of his career, but first since 2007-08, when he was with Edmonton. R.J. Umberger picked up an empty-net tally for Columbus, which has won three of four to start the season.

"You come in and you open three teams' buildings on the road to start the year and win two of them -- that's a good start," Columbus head coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I just thought today throughout our lineup we were way more competitive."

Ilya Bryzgalov made 17 saves in the loss, the second in a row for Phoenix, which had opened the season with wins over Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.

Saturday's contest was the first at home for Coyotes this season after a summer of turmoil, since team owner Jerry Moyes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in May.

But while the franchise's future in Phoenix is in limbo, the club skated in front of a sold-out arena Saturday.

"(The sellout crowd) was excellent," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "It's too bad we couldn't find something to make them erupt like they wanted to. I think the players sensed that."

Nash got his goal midway through the first period, after a Coyotes turnover in the neutral zone. Columbus turned around the possession quickly, and Derick Brassard brought the puck across the blue line. Brassard sent a short pass to his right for Kristian Huselius, who dished cross-ice to Nash for the one- timer by the left side of the net.

That goal, which came at the 10:36 mark, stood as the game's only tally until Umberger's score in the final minute.

Garon stopped 12 shots in the first period, 14 in the second and 10 in the third to keep Phoenix off the board.

Game Notes

Phoenix was 0-for-7 on the power-play, while Columbus was 0-for-2...The Blue Jackets dropped all four games against the Coyotes last season, and got their first win over Phoenix since February 7, 2008.
