NHL Game Summary - Washington at St. Louis

(Saturday, February 13th)

Final Score: St. Louis 4, Washington 3 (SO)

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - David Perron notched the winner in the fourth round of the shootout propelled St. Louis over Washington, 4-3, at Scottrade Center.

Perron provided the first goal for either club to begin the round, managing to slide a backhander into the net beneath a backsliding Jose Theodore. Brendan Morrison then was stopped on a wrister to end the contest.

Patrik Berglund, Erik Johnson and T.J. Oshie tallied in regulation for the Blues, winners of three in a row before the NHL's hiatus. Chris Mason made 31 saves for the win.

"Regardless of who our wins are against those points are huge for us," Mason said. "We've been up and down so far all throughout the season so these wins at home are absolutely huge."

Mike Knuble scored a pair of goals and Alexander Semin had the other for the Capitals, who slid into the Olympic break having dropped three in a row, all on the road. Theodore finished with 33 stops on 36 shots.

"I don't think we were fresh today," Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin said. "It's a good time for rest for our group of guys."

Both clubs recorded power-play goals 1:27 apart midway through the first period. Berglund opened the scoring for St. Louis at 9:13 followed by Knuble's answer for Washington at 10:40.

Oshie restored a one-goal edge for the home team after the midway point of regulation, but Semin came back at 13:26 to tie the score once more.

Johnson's rip from the point on a Blues power play made it 3-2 with 4:37 left in the period, but Knuble responded on a Caps advantage a little more than two minutes later.

Theodore was tested in the overtime, and came up big with a stop on David Backes' partial breakaway then an Oshie bullet in the final 30 seconds.

Game Notes

St. Louis has won six of the last eight meetings...Knuble recorded his fifth multi-goal effort of the season...The Blues resume play on March 2 at Phoenix and the Capitals return to the ice on March 3 in Buffalo.
