NHL Game Summary - Florida at Carolina

(Friday, October 9th)

Final Score: Carolina 7, Florida 2

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Jussi Jokinen had a goal and two assists, as the Carolina Hurricanes roughed up the Florida Panthers, 7-2, at RBC Center.

Matt Cullen, Tuomo Ruutu and Rod Brind'Amour each had a goal and assist for the Hurricanes, who have won their past two games after dropping two straight to start the season. Cam Ward made 25 saves in the win.

"It was good," said Carolina coach Paul Maurice about getting contributions from several players. "We go three games with people who expect to score but don't and they feel it right away, and hopefully those guys got a little more confidence with the puck now."

Shawn Matthias and Michael Frolik each had a goal, while Tomas Vokoun was charged with five goals on 26 shots before being pulled from net early in the third period for the Panthers, who opened up their season splitting two games against Chicago in Helsinki, Finland. Alexander Salak finished the game in net and gave up two goals on seven shots.

The Hurricanes dominated play in the first period and had a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The first goal came shorthanded, as Tom Kostopoulos picked the pocket of Bryan McCabe in the Florida zone and stuffed his own rebound past Vokoun seven minutes in.

Ruutu made it a 2-0 game at the 10:20 mark on a clean breakaway from his own zone, burying the puck past the glove of Vokoun.

With 2:55 left in the period Carolina scored its final goal of the frame, as the puck bounced off the backboards and went to the left side of the net where Jokinen grabbed it and tucked it past Vokoun.

"Hats off to Carolina, they played a great first period, and the game was over in the first 20 minutes, that was the story of the game," said Florida coach Peter DeBoer. "We turned pucks over and made mental mistakes, and they capitalized."

Ray Whitney gave Carolina a 4-0 lead on a lead pass from Niclas Wallin. He made a move to get Vokoun's pads open and slid the disc into the net with 6:30 to play in the second.

Florida got on the board a bit over three minutes later, as Matthias banged in a rebound from in front of the net during a scrum out front to make it a 4-1 contest.

Cullen gave Carolina its four-goal lead back just 1:32 into the third with his first goal of the season.

Brind'Amour's goal with 4:46 to play was followed by a goal from Jay Harrison just 19 seconds later turned the game into a rout.

Frolik's goal with 2:12 to play capped the scoring in the contest.
