NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Carolina
(Thursday, February 11th)
Final Score: Carolina 4, Buffalo 3 (OT)
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Sergei Samsonov scored 1:47 into overtime as Carolina equaled its longest win streak of the season and sent Buffalo to a sixth straight loss with a 4-3 overtime victory at RBC Center.
Brandon Sutter collected a career-high three points with a goal and two assists to help the Hurricanes tally their second four-game win streak of the season.
Ray Whitney and Stephane Yelle also scored, while Manny Legace made 30 saves for Carolina, which has won eight of 10 overall and five straight games at home.
Derek Roy tallied twice and Jochen Hecht once for the struggling Sabres, who have lost six straight games for the first time in over two years. Ryan Miller had 31 saves in the loss.
Samsonov's game-winner came off a broken play next to the Sabres net. Buffalo defenseman Steve Montador circled in behind the cage to start a rush, but lost an edge and tumbled to the ice just off the left post. The loose disc funneled to Sutter, who flicked a back-handed pass to the slot where the Russian winger beat Miller's glove for the win.
"Well sometimes when things are going bad you get those things that happen," said Sabres coach Lindy Ruff. "We got a little bit fragile...I thought we lost a little hope for a while but then we got it back and we stayed in the third period."
Yelle had the lone goal of the middle stanza, snapping off a wrister on a right-wing rush at 9:55 to give the 'Canes a 3-2 lead.
Roy then evened things back up with 7:07 left in regulation, stuffing in Thomas Vanek's failed wraparound attempt at the left post.
A busy first period saw Roy net his first of the game just 2:13 in and Hecht's deflected shot from along the left boards skiddered in for a 2-0 edge with six minutes remaining.
But the 'Canes got a pair of power-play goals before the close of the period, as Sutter picked up a loose puck in the low slot to get one back and Whitney found the top right corner from in close only a second before the horn.
"Before we scored the power play goals and Sutter's line goes out and (Tuomo) Ruutu throws a couple hits and we draw a penalty and end up drawing another one, that for me was a turning point because we weren't really skating the way we were going to need to," said 'Canes head coach Paul Maurice.
Buffalo has also dropped seven in a row on the road...Carolina's Jussi Jokinen had an assist to run his points streak to eight games. He has six goals and three assists over that time... Maurice picked up his 100th career victory, while Ruttu reached the 200-point plateau for his career with an assist...Buffalo last had six straight losses during an 0-5-5 skid from December 26, 2007-January 16, 2008.
