(Friday, December 11th)

Final Score: Washington 4, Carolina 3 (OT)

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Green scored the game-winner 1:16 into overtime, as the Washington Capitals continued their solid play at home with a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in a Southeast Division battle at Verizon Center.

Nicklas Backstrom, who had two assists in the contest, won a battle along the boards and slid a pass in front to Green, whose wrister beat Cam Ward in OT.

Alexander Semin had two goals for the Capitals, who improved to 10-2-3 as the host this year. Tomas Fleischmann also scored for Washington, which has won seven of its last eight games. Jose Theodore made 16 saves for the victors.

Tim Gleason, Eric Staal, and Jiri Tlusty each lit the lamp for the Hurricanes, who dropped to 1-11-4 as the visitor this year. Ward turned aside 36-of-40 shots in defeat.

The Hurricanes drew first blood just 2:01 into the first period. Brandon Sutter led a 2-on-1 charge down the right side of the ice before sliding a pass in front to Tlusty, who tipped the disc into the net for his first goal of the year.

Staal's score with 6:07 remaining gave Carolina a 2-0 edge. Staal made his way around the net before attempting a wraparound. Theodore stopped the shot but Staal chipped in his own rebound.

Washington lit the lamp with 6:53 left in the second to cut the deficit to one. Alex Ovechkin slid a cross-ice pass to Semin, whose wrister from the right circle got past Ward. Semin also scored with 0.6 seconds remaining to deadlock the contest at 2-2.

Fleischmann lit the lamp just 2:52 into the third to give the Capitals the lead. Mathieu Perreault controlled the disc at the bottom of the left circle before starting to make his way behind the net. Perreault then slid a pass in front to Fleischmann, who beat Ward with a wrist shot.

Gleason's short-handed goal off a slapper tied the contest at three with 6:30 to play in regulation.

Neither team scored the rest of the way to send the tilt into overtime.
