Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Brian Gionta scored 2:42 into overtime as Montreal spoiled Buffalo's season opener with its second consecutive win in extra time, as the Canadiens took a 2-1 decision at HSBC Arena.
Another offseason acquisition, Travis Moen, scored a shorthanded goal for the Canadiens, who earned an overtime victory over the Maple Leafs in their season-opener on Thursday.
Carey Price made 34 saves in the victory, while Buffalo's Ryan Miller was beaten twice on 17 shots.
Tim Connolly scored the only goal for the Sabres, who missed out on the playoffs for a second straight season last year.
Just six seconds into Glen Metropolit's hooking penalty early in the opening period, Connolly lit the lamp with a wrist shot.
Montreal, playing its first game without top defenseman Andrei Markov, tied the game with 8 1/2 minutes to go in the second frame on Moen's tally.
Price was up to the task on all 11 shots he faced in the third. The visitors only managed one shot in the final regulation period, but Gionta beat Miller midway through the extra session to come away victorious.
Markov suffered a lacerated ankle tendon on Thursday and is expected to miss four months...Montreal next plays at Calgary on Tuesday, while the Sabres host Phoenix on Thursday...Montreal had dropped three straight tests at HSBC...There were 19 penalties called in the game. Buffalo went 1-for-7 with the extra man, while Montreal went scoreless in six tries.
