NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Philadelphia

(Thursday, December 10th)

Final Score: Ottawa 2, Philadelphia 0

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Brian Elliott made 23 saves for his first shutout of the season, as the Ottawa Senators downed the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-0, at Wachovia Center.

Nick Foligno and Jesse Winchester each had a goal for the Senators, who had dropped five of six coming into the game.

"Any win on the road is a big win," said Ottawa head coach Cory Clouston. "We've been struggling a little bit of late. I think the biggest difference tonight was Brian (Elliott) was real solid."

Brian Boucher stopped 23 shots in the loss for the Flyers, who have dropped six of their last seven. Philadelphia has been blanked in three of its last six games.

"The puck never found the net," said Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette. "We missed the net. There were a lot of blocked shots by Ottawa."

In the third with the game scoreless, Ottawa took the lead as Foligno fired a quick shot on net from the left circle that Boucher stopped, but he followed up his own rebound and slid a low backhand in with 8:29 to play.

The Flyers were awarded a power play with 2:27 to play when Matt Carkner was called for boarding, but the Ottawa penalty killers blocked several shots and, after the Flyers pulled Boucher for a 6-on-4, Winchester sealed the win with the empty-netter.

It was a spirited first period that saw opportunities on each side, but Elliott made eight saves and Boucher stopped 12 pucks to keep it scoreless.

The goaltenders and defense kept up their good play in the second as Elliott stopped seven shots while Boucher made five.

The best opportunity of the frame came with under six minutes to play and Philadelphia skating shorthanded as Scott Hartnell blocked a shot and skated down the other end unopposed. He went to the backhand and flicked the puck on net, but Elliott came up with a glove save.
