NHL Game Summary - Washington at Buffalo

(Wednesday, December 9th)

Final Score: Buffalo 3, Washington 0

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Workhorse goaltender Ryan Miller turned aside all 35 shots he faced, including 13 in the third period, to record his fourth shutout of the season and help the Buffalo Sabres stymie Washington, 3-0, at HSBC Arena and halt the Capitals' six-game winning streak.

Miller, who entered play leading the NHL with a 1.90 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage, has started 25 of the club's first 28 games.

Nathan Gerbe pumped in his first NHL goal and collected an assist for Buffalo, which snapped a two-game slide and improved to 2-2-0 on a five-game homestand that concludes Friday against Chicago.

The Sabres also got goals from defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Steve Montador, while Derek Roy picked up two helpers. The win vaulted Buffalo into first place in the Northeast Division, one point ahead of idle Boston.

"We know (the Capitals) have a lot of offensive firepower and to keep them to zero goals is a great achievement. Ryan did a good job in the net. He made some huge saves for us," Roy said.

Jose Theodore, starting in place of injured Capitals goaltender Semyon Varlamov, made 25 saves. The sensational rookie, who recorded a shutout Monday in Tampa, is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Washington did not indicate how Varlamov was hurt.

Montador's tally enabled Buffalo to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. He held the puck at the point and whipped a low shot that deflected in off the skate of Washington defenseman Milan Jurcina at 4:06.

For only the third time this season, Washington trailed after the opening 20 minutes. The Capitals had come back to win both times previously, edging the New York Islanders beyond regulation on each occasion.

Summoned from Portland of the AHL earlier Wednesday, Gerbe snapped a quick shot from along the goal line to the left of Theodore that squeezed through the netminder with 5:18 remaining in the middle stanza and Washington's Mike Green serving a high-sticking penalty.

Buffalo led 3-0 when Tallinder smoothly glided from end-to-end and buried his own rebound with 2:02 to go in the second period.

Game Notes

It was Miller's 16th career shutout...Roy leads the Sabres with 17 assists...Washington had won four straight road games...Buffalo was without defenseman Chris Butler (ankle) and right wing Mike Grier (personal reasons)...Washington returns home to welcome the Hurricanes on Friday.
