NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Minnesota

St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Jamie Benn scored the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout as the Dallas Stars edged the Minnesota Wild, 4-3, at Xcel Energy Center.
After a scoreless first three rounds, Wild forward Casey Wellman fired a wrister wide of the net. Benn then skated in and beat Niklas Backstrom with a wrist shot to end the game.
Steve Ott scored a pair of goals in regulation for the Stars (37-31-14), who finished the season with two straight victories. Brenden Morrow also lit the lamp for Dallas, which got 24 saves from Kari Lehtonen.
Mikko Koivu had two goals for the Wild (38-36-8), who dropped five of six to finish the season. Wellman also lit the lamp for Minnesota, which got 23 saves from Backstrom.
The night belonged to Stars forward Mike Modano, who may be hanging up his skates after 20 seasons in the league. The 39-year-old hasn't announced his plans for the future.
An eight-time All-Star and member of the Stars' 1999 Stanley Cup championship team, Modano put on his old North Stars jersey after the game and skated around the ice.
"The reception was phenomenal," Modano said. "There's fans out there that still miss us and in some ways we miss them."
Minnesota got on the board on Koivu's power-play goal at the 5:52 mark of the first period. Koivu took a pass from Brent Burns and fired a wrister from the side of the net that snuck past Lehtonen.
Koivu's snap shot at the midway point made it a 2-0 game.
Dallas scored a power play goal at the 4:27 mark of the second to cut the gap to one. Loui Eriksson slid a pass from behind the net for Morrow, whose wrist shot beat Backstrom.
Ott added a wrister of his own at the 7:56 mark to make it a 2-2 contest heading to the third.
Wellman's first career NHL goal nine seconds into the final period made it 3-2 in favor of the Wild. Kyle Brodziak's shot set up a rebound in front for Wellman, who jammed the puck into the net.
"It felt really good," Wellman said of his memorable goal. "Hopefully it leads to some more next year."
Dallas made it a 3-3 game on Ott's second score of the tilt at the 2:52 mark.
The Stars recorded the only shot on goal in the extra session.
Dallas won the season series with Minnesota, 3-1...The Stars missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1987 and '88...Dallas ended the year with a 14-20-7 mark on the road...Minnesota, which missed the playoffs for the second season in a row, went 25-12-4 at home this year.
