NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Ottawa

(Thursday, February 4th)

Final Score: Ottawa 3, Vancouver 1

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Brian Elliott stopped 29 shots as Ottawa ran its franchise-best winning streak to 11 games with a 3-1 win over Vancouver at Scotiabank Place.

Milan Michalek had a goal and an assist while Jason Spezza also lit the lamp for the Senators, who have not lost a game since a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Atlanta on January 12. Chris Kelly added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the win.

Kyle Wellwood scored the lone goal while Andrew Raycroft stopped 18-of-20 shots for the Canucks, who are 1-2-0 on their NHL-record 14-game road trip.

Ottawa took the lead just 1:34 into the game on the power play as Alex Kovalev's soft pass from the right boards was redirected into the net by Michalek in the slot.

The Ottawa defense was stifling in the first period as it allowed just three shots on net, all of which Elliott turned aside.

Spezza made it a 2-0 game with under two minutes to play in the first as he skated down the right wing and threw the puck on net where it trickled across the line before it could be swiped out of harms way.

Vancouver made it a one-goal game with 1:39 to play in the game on the power play. Pavol Demitra sent the puck from the low right side of the net to the slot where Mason Raymond threw it down to the low left side and Wellwood slammed it home.

The Canucks pulled Raycroft for the extra attacker in an attempt to tie the game, but Kelly's empty-netter killed any chances of a comeback.

"I thought the last 15 minutes we sat back a little complacent instead of continuing to pressure. But I thought the first 30-35 minutes we played very well," said Senators coach Cory Clouston.
