NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Anaheim
(Wednesday, February 3rd)
Final Score: Anaheim 3, Detroit 1
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jonas Hiller was stellar between the pipes, stopping 46 shots to help Anaheim earn their ninth straight home win, a 3-1 decision over the Detroit Red Wings.
Bobby Ryan, Kyle Chipchura and Ryan Whitney lit the lamp for the Ducks, who returned to Honda Center after going 3-3-0 on their season-long, six-game road trip.
"We had a good start and that gave us a lot of confidence," Hiller said. "It's fun to play if you get a lot of shots, but it's also a little tiring."
Pavel Datsyuk was the only Red Wing to solve Anaheim's Swiss netminder. Jimmy Howard made 27 saves for Detroit, which has dropped eight of its last 11 games.
Whitney beat Howard with a snap shot from the point to open the scoring 1:11 into the contest. A Steve Eminger shot deflected off Chipchura and past Howard for a 2-0 Ducks lead at 16:13 of the first period.
"They got a couple of goals early on by throwing the puck at the net and creating traffic," said Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.
Ryan hit the net from the low slot at the 8:55 mark of the middle session, then Datsyuk, denied earlier in the frame on a breakaway, lifted the puck over the glove of Hiller to put Detroit on the board with 10 seconds left in the second period.
Hiller turned away all 16 shots he faced in the final 20 minutes to make the two-goal advantage stand up.
Ryan Getzlaf had two assists for the Ducks...Anaheim visits the Kings on Thursday...The Red Wings fell to 1-1-1 on a five-game road trip that resumes Saturday in Los Angeles.
