NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Calgary

(Wednesday, February 3rd)

Final Score: Calgary 4, Carolina 1

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Curtis Glencross recorded the first hat trick of his career to power the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Pengrowth Saddledome.

Matt Stajan, acquired in Sunday's seven-player deal that sent defenseman Dion Phanuef to Toronto, scored the other goal for Calgary, which won for just the second time in its last 12 games. Miikka Kiprusoff earned the win with a 27- save effort.

"I thought our forecheck was much better tonight," said Flames head coach Brent Sutter. "Overall as a team it was a solid effort."

Eric Staal netted a power-play goal for the Hurricanes, who have dropped the first two stops on their four-game road trip that continues Friday in Buffalo. Cam Ward was beaten three times on 38 shots in defeat.

"Our power play has been real good in the last month but tonight it sure stunk," said Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. The Hurricanes were 1-for-9 on the man advantage.

A friendly carom gave Calgary a 1-0 lead. Eric Nystrom came around the near post, wheeled and fired a shot on net that went in off Glencross at 2:54 of the first period.

Staal tied the game when he redirected a Jussi Jokinen shot past Kiprusoff at 7:19 of the middle stanza.

Glencross blasted a slap shot that beat Ward on the blocker side with 2:25 remaining in the second period, just 52 seconds after Stajan took a Jarome Iginla feed off his right skate and scored on the forehand.

Glencross' empty-net tally cemented the win and the trifecta with 1:02 left in the third period.
