NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Minnesota
(Wednesday, December 2nd)
Final Score: Minnesota 5, Nashville 4 (OT)
St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Andrew Ebbett's goal 1:26 into overtime lifted Minnesota over Nashville, 5-4, at Xcel Energy Center.
Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne began the sequence with a great diving stop on Greg Zanon on the right wing. The rebound kicked behind the net where Zanon circled, then dished across the slot to Guillaume Latendresse for a one-timer Rinne stopped. The rebound slid out to Ebbett in the slot for an easy tap-in.
"It was a fun goal to score," Ebbett said. "Luckily the first shot hit the post or something but the second one came right to me. I was in the right place at the right time."
Mikko Koivu and Latendresse picked up a goal and assist each for the Wild, who have won three in a row and four of five. Antti Miettinen and Cal Clutterbuck also scored and Niklas Backstrom stopped 31 shots for the win.
Jason Arnott recorded two goals and one assist for the Predators, who have dropped three of four. Steve Sullivan added a goal and three helpers while Marcel Goc also tallied. Rinne made 22 saves in regulation and overtime.
Goc opened the scoring for the Preds at 7:20, but the Wild struck back with a pair from Miettinen and Clutterbuck four minutes apart.
Arnott's score with 3:08 left in the first pulled Nashville even before Latendresse gave Minnesota a 3-2 edge 36 seconds later. Sullivan's tally at the 8:27 mark of the second was the lone goal of the middle stanza and produced a 3-3 tie.
Arnott's heavy slapshot from the right circle got through Backstrom and gave the Predators a 4-3 lead 3:42 into the third period, but Andrew Brunette set the table for Koivu's power-play goal with 6:58 left in regulation.
"I think the pace of the game early hurt us a little bit. But we battled and competed," said Wild head coach Todd Richards. "I think the team showed a lot of character in gutting out the win. It's not the way we want to play but it got the job done."
The score proved to be Ebbett's first-career game-winning goal...The clubs have split the last six meetings...Sullivan's last four-point effort came on February 18, 2004 against San Jose.
