NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Edmonton
(Monday, February 1st)
Final Score: Edmonton 4, Carolina 2
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Jeff Deslauriers made 15 of his 33 saves in a scoreless third period, as Edmonton topped Carolina, 4-2, to halt a miserable 13-game losing streak.
With the win, the Oilers avoided matching their longest winless streak in club history, a 14-game span from October 11 - November 7, 1993.
Marc Pouliot and Jean-Francois Jacques each had a goal and an assist, while Sam Gagner and Gilbert Brule also tallied for Edmonton, which was 0-11-2 since a win over Toronto on December 30.
"It hasn't been real good for us in the last month," Deslauriers said. "We have to look forward and start fresh."
Andrew Alberts and Jussi Jokinen lit the lamp for the Hurricanes, who had their season-high four-game winning streak stopped. Cam Ward was beaten four times on 27 shots in defeat.
Down 2-1 midway through the second period, Jokinen used nifty stick-handling before backhanding a power-play goal past Deslauriers at the 10:49 mark.
Pouliot answered with his first of the year, a wraparound try that snuck by Ward with 6:29 left in the middle stanza for a 3-2 lead.
Edmonton went on the power play later in the frame, and Gagner cleaned up Mike Comrie's rebound at the 17:05 mark for a two-goal lead.
The Oilers dumped the puck through much of the final period, and Deslauriers was up to the task in the few true scoring chances he faced to notch Edmonton's first win of the calendar year.
"I thought [Edmonton] worked hard and skated real hard," Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice said. "It wasn't a pretty game to watch from either team's side, but their goalie was good."
Alberts' slap shot following Brandon Sutter's faceoff win opened the scoring 2:42 into the game, but Jacques netted a bad-angle goal at the eight-minute mark to quickly tie it.
Seven minutes later, Brule snapped a wrister over Ward's right shoulder.
