NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Chicago
(Sunday, April 12th)
Final Score: Chicago 3, Detroit 0
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Nikolai Khabibulin made 37 saves to notch his third shutout of the season and 41st of his career, as the Chicago Blackhawks completed a rejuvenating 2008-09 campaign with a 3-0 win over Detroit in the back end of a home-and-home set.
Andrew Ladd, Jonathan Toews and Dave Bolland each had a goal for the Blackhawks (46-24-12), who bested the Red Wings in the Motor City on Saturday and finished the year with six wins in seven games.
"We played hard the last two games and we want to keep the momentum going and continue it into the playoffs," said Chicago forward Martin Havlat.
Returning to the postseason for the first time since 2002, Chicago is the fourth seed in the Western Conference and will have home-ice advantage in a first-round clash against Calgary.
Chris Osgood stopped 20-of-23 shots for Detroit (51-21-10), which dropped three straight to conclude the regular season.
"We rested some guys and were getting ready for the playoffs," said Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios. "You never kid yourself. It's a game of inches and bounces, and tonight it didn't go our way."
The Red Wings have secured the second spot in the West and will face either Anaheim or Columbus depending on the outcome of Sunday's game between St. Louis and Colorado. If the Blues win, Detroit will take on the Blue Jackets, who are making their maiden appearance in the playoffs. On the other hand, if the Avalanche emerge victorious, the Red Wings will begin defense of their title against the Ducks.
Ladd was open in the slot and tapped in a feed from Brent Seabrook to give Chicago a 1-0 lead at 7:29 of the first period. Toews then muscled his way towards the net and shoveled the puck between the pads of Osgood with 8:31 to play in the opening frame.
Bolland added a power-play tally early in the third period to complete the scoring.
Toews led the team in goals with 34...Detroit won four of the six meetings with Chicago this season...The Blackhawks finished 1-for-3 with the man advantage, while Detroit was 0-for-5...Chicago posted a 24-9-8 record on home ice this season...The Red Wings finished 24-12-5 on the road...Despite being shutout, Detroit finished with the most goals in the NHL with 295.
