NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Ottawa
(Saturday, April 4th)
Final Score: Ottawa 4, Philadelphia 3 (SO)
Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Mike Fisher scored in the fifth round of the shootout as the Ottawa Senators slipped by the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-3, at Scotiabank Place.
After Claude Giroux went backhand to forehand and smacked it off the right side of the net, Fisher skated in on net and buried a wrister past Antero Niittymaki for the win.
Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist while Chris Kelly and Nick Foligno also lit the lamp for the Senators, who had dropped four of five coming into the game. Alex Auld stopped 31 shots in the win.
"It's always nice to get a win in front of the home crowd," said Spezza. "We got a few games left here and we want to end the season on a good note."
Mike Richards had a goal and an assist while Simon Gagne and Darroll Powe also had a goal apiece for the Flyers, who have dropped four of their last six games. Niittymaki made 35 saves in the loss.
"He gives our team a chance every time he's out there," said Philadelphia head coach John Stevens about Niittymaki. "He's a big reason we got a point here so we just have to move on."
Philadelphia has 95 points on the season and sits in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. The team is tied with Carolina in points, but Philadelphia has played one less game than the Hurricanes.
Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, the Senators took a 1-0 lead. Daniel Alfredsson sent the puck from the slot to the low left side. From there, Spezza whipped it across the net for Foligno, who tapped it in for his 17th goal of the season at the 10:42 mark of the first.
Ottawa took a 2-0 lead at the 2:26 mark of the second period when Kelly was sprung on a breakaway and he slid the disc between the pads of Niittymaki.
Just 32 seconds later, though, Powe was hooked on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. He made it count as he slipped a low backhand past the left pad of Auld for his sixth goal of the season.
Philadelphia then tied the game at the 10:46 mark on the power play as Danny Briere won a right circle faceoff back to Richards, who let fly with a shot that went into the net for his 30th goal of the season.
Philly took a 3-2 lead just 28 seconds into the third period. A strong forecheck resulted in the puck going out front where Richards grabbed it and sent it down low for Gagne, who stuffed a backhand in from the right side.
However, the Sens answered a bit over three minutes later as Spezza's quick wrist shot from the left circle beat Niittymaki to tie the game.
