NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Edmonton
(Friday, January 30th)
Final Score: Edmonton 3, Minnesota 1
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Dwayne Roloson stopped 29 shots as Edmonton tripped up Minnesota, 3-1, at Rexall Place.
Ales Hemsky, Ethan Moreau and Lubomir Visnovsky scored for the Oilers, who have won four of their last five contests. They also rebounded from a 10-2 loss to Buffalo on Tuesday.
"You can forget about it when you come out and play as well as we did as a team tonight," said Roloson. "We played a full 60 minutes, probably one of our best games we've played all year."
James Sheppard scored for the Wild, who have dropped three of five. Starter Niklas Backstrom played just under 23 minutes and allowed three goals on 11 shots in defeat. Josh Harding finished the game by stopping all 17 shots he faced.
Hemsky gave the Oilers the early 1-0 lead with a score 5:51 into the contest, and Moreau added a second tally with 3:06 left in the first period.
Visnovsky made it 3-0 for Edmonton exactly three minutes into the second -- a power-play goal and the Oilers' second shot of the period -- and Backstrom exited for Harding.
Minnesota dodged a late Oilers power play, and Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky hit the right pipe on a breakaway out of the box with 2:35 remaining.
Sheppard flipped a shot off Roloson's shoulder 38 seconds into the third period to bring the Wild within 3-1, but that's as close as the visitors came to a comeback.
"We took a couple of penalties early in the second and they capitalized on it to make it 3-0," said Minnesota right wing Cal Clutterbuck. "You know, 3-1 at the beginning of the third is a bit different than 2-1."
Minnesota failed on its two power-play opportunities over the final 20 minutes, then couldn't muster any offense with the goaltender pulled in the final minute.
Edmonton has won three of the last five meetings...Moreau picked up his 100th goal as an Oiler...Minnesota fell to 5-19-2 when scoring two goals or less this season...The Oilers improved to 11-2 when leading after two periods.
