NHL Game Summary - Boston at Edmonton

(Monday, October 27th)

Final Score: Boston 1, Edmonton 0 (OT)

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Dennis Wideman scored on the power play 3:18 into overtime and Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots in his first shutout of the season, as the Boston Bruins edged the Edmonton Oilers, 1-0.

Thomas notched his eighth career shutout. Marc Savard and Zdeno Chara assisted on the goal for Boston, which has won two straight contests.

"It's nice,.there's no doubt about it," said Thomas. "In my own mind I don't think that I've played that bad."

Dwayne Roloson stopped 35 shots, but let in the 36th to spoil the night for Edmonton, which has dropped four straight after starting the season with four consecutive wins. The Oilers have also been outshot in seven of eight games this season.

Boston broke the deadlock in overtime with Shawn Horcoff in the box for hooking. Wideman faked a shot from the top of the right circle and passed to Savard, positioned next to the net. Savard turned as if to take a shot but sent the puck back to Wideman.

Wideman then faked a one-timer, moved in a few feet and snapped a shot that found its way to the back of the net glove-side high.

"I thought it was soft," Horcoff said of the penalty call. "That's what happens when you turn the puck over and you're fishing from behind,.you're trying to get back,.you don't want to give up a 2-on-1 with that time left."

The victory was Boston's first overtime triumph this season, with three shootout losses.

Thomas stopped 10 shots and Roloson 15, as the teams skated to a scoreless tie after the first period.

It was still scoreless after 40 minutes, as Thomas needed to make only five saves in the second frame and Roloson stopped nine shots. Thomas then made 12 stops in the third period while Roloson had 10.
