NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Atlanta
(Saturday, November 22nd)
Final Score: Columbus 2, Atlanta 0
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Rookie Steve Mason needed to save just 15 shots for his first career shutout as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Atlanta Thrashers, 2-0, at Philips Arena.
Rick Nash had a goal and an assist, while R.J. Umberger scored the other goal for the Blue Jackets, who had lost three of four coming into the game.
"I'm just going to try to take it in stride," said Mason about the shutout. "It's only one game and you have to move on after it. We have a game on Wednesday and that has to be our focus. Overall it was a pretty simple game. The only hard part was staying focused."
Ondrej Pavelec stopped 28-of-29 shots in the loss for the Thrashers, who have dropped three straight after a season-high five-game winning streak.
"We can't come out flat and try to make it up in the third," said Atlanta defenseman Garnet Exelby. "We need to come out hungry in the first and not get too far behind. We are going to be in big trouble by Christmas for the playoff picture if we keep playing this way."
Columbus got the only goal of the first period at the 8:36 mark of the frame as Ole-Kristian Tollefsen threw a shot on net from the left point that bounced around in front before going to the right side, where Nash backhanded it in for his 10th goal of the season.
Atlanta managed just four shots on net in the first period, all of which Mason stopped.
The middle portion of the game went scoreless as Atlanta was held to five shots while Pavelec had to make 13 saves to keep it a one-goal game.
The Thrashers just couldn't get any consistent offense in the third period as the team only managed six shots and, with the goaltender pulled, Umberger sealed the win with an empty-netter with 1:18 to play.
Atlanta next plays on Tuesday in Toronto ...Columbus has off until Wednesday when it will host Phoenix...The Thrashers went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Columbus failed on all three chances it had.
