NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Detroit
(Wednesday, February 25th)
Final Score: Detroit 4, San Jose 1
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg had a pair of goals, as the Detroit Red Wings halted the streaking San Jose Sharks with a 4-1 win at Joe Louis Arena.
With the win, the Red Wings now have 88 points, only three behind Western Conference-leading San Jose.
Marian Hossa scored, continuing his good play against the Sharks. He has scored in each of Detroit's four games against San Jose this season, and finished the season series with four goals and three assists. The teams split the series with two regulation wins apiece.
Ville Leino for Detroit, which rebounded from a loss to Minnesota on Saturday to take its third win in four games. Ty Conklin made 34 saves in the win.
Christian Ehrhoff had the lone goal for San Jose, which had its four-game win streak snapped. Evgeni Nabokov gave up all four goals on 33 shots in the loss.
Hossa got the Red Wings on the scoreboard first, 6:51 into the game. With Detroit on the power play, his shot from the right circle trickled between Nabokov's pads.
Then, with time winding down in the first period, Kirk Maltby's shot from the right side got deflected into the air. Leino was on the left side of the crease, and batted it into the open net with 3:52 remaining.
The Sharks appeared to have a goal only moments later, when a shot from in front hit the right post, settled into the crease behind Conklin and went over the goal line. The on-ice official behind the net ruled it a goal, but a further review nullified the score.
Then, Zetterberg made it a 3-0 game with a shorthanded goal shortly into the second period. He stole the puck in the neutral zone, as a Sharks player couldn't locate the disk, and raced into the San Jose end. Zetterberg was mirrored by a defender, but turned a full circle in the slot to shed him, then tucked a shot into the left side of the net at the 4:08 mark.
Ehrhoff's power-play point shot got past a screen and Conklin at 6:25, and the game remained a 3-1 affair going to the third period.
The Red Wings held off the Sharks down the stretch, and Zetterberg added a goal with 2:57 left while Detroit had a 5-on-3 situation to seal the win.
