NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at Detroit
(Friday, October 24th)
Final Score: Detroit 5, Atlanta 3
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Marian Hossa had two goals and an assist against his former team as the Detroit Red Wings downed the Atlanta Thrashers, 5-3, at Joe Louis Arena.
Hossa had spent two-plus seasons in Atlanta, but was dealt to Pittsburgh before the trade deadline last season, and he then signed a one-year deal with Detroit in the offseason.
Henrik Zetterberg had two goals while Dan Cleary also lit the lamp for the Red Wings, who have won five of their last six games. Chris Osgood made 30 saves in the win.
Brett Sterling, Ron Hainsey and Jim Slater each had a goal for the Thrashers, who have dropped five of their last six. Kari Lehtonen made 41 saves in defeat.
Trailing by three goals to start the third period, Atlanta got back into the contest with a pair of goals.
On the power play, Hainsey made it a two-goal contest as his shot found the back of the net for his second goal of the year at the 4:48 mark of the third.
With under four minutes to play, Erik Christensen's spin-around, behind the back centering pass from the right boards found the tape of Sterling, who jammed the puck past Osgood to make it a 4-3 game.
Cleary, though, got the empty-net goal with 36 seconds to play to seal the win for Detroit.
Detroit got on the board just 2:12 into the game with a power-play marker as Zetterberg received a pass from Jiri Hudler and from the slot snapped a shot into the left corner of the net.
Atlanta tied the game as Jason Williams' initial shot from the slot was stopped, but Slater jammed home the rebound with 5:25 left in the first.
The Red Wings, though, scored three unanswered goals to take control of the game.
Hossa gave the team a 2-1 lead as he skated through the slot to get around a defender, faked out Lehtonen and with his back to the wall at the right side of the net he tucked the puck into the net with 4:18 to play in the first.
In the second period, Hossa worked a give-and-go with Niklas Kronwall and from the slot Hossa beat Lehtonen with a wrister at the 5:29 mark.
Just 1:12 later, the Red Wings made it a 4-1 game as Johan Franzen's shot was stopped, but Zetterberg was at the right side of the net and he backhanded the puck into the top of the net.
