NHL Game Summary - Washington at Phoenix

(Thursday, October 23rd)

Final Score: Phoenix 2, Washington 1

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mikael Tellqvist, making his first start of the season, stopped 31-of-32 shots to help the Phoenix Coyotes to a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.

Peter Mueller had the game-winning goal for the Coyotes, who saw their three- game slide become history. Mikkel Boedker also lit the lamp in the win, while Olli Jokinen had an assist.

Brooks Laich had the lone tally for the Caps, who have dropped three straight contests. Alexander Semin had an assist in defeat, while Jose Theodore let in both goals on 34 shots.

Phoenix took the lead for good at the 6:32 mark of the third period. Martin Hanzal was skating down the right boards and hit Mueller with a cross-ice pass. Mueller redirected the puck past an unprepared Theodore for a 2-1 lead, and the Coyotes held on for the win from there.

Theodore stopped 14 shots and Tellqvist halted 13 in a scoreless first period.

The Caps struck first at the 8:18 mark of the second stanza. During a power play, with Jokinen in the box for tripping, Semin assisted on a Laich wrist shot that beat Tellqvist to give Washington a 1-0 lead.

The Coyotes, though, knotted the contest up just 2 1/2 minutes into the third period.

As Washington tried to clear the puck out of its zone, Jokinen stopped the disc at the blue line and slid a pass to Boedker coming down the slot. His wrister beat Theodore and it was a 1-1 contest.
