NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at Florida
(Saturday, January 10th)
Final Score: Florida 8, Atlanta 4
Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Ville Peltonen scored twice and Radek Dvorak added a goal with two assists, as the Florida Panthers scored five times in the third period and hammered the Atlanta Thrashers, 8-4, at BankAtlantic Center.
Michael Frolik, David Booth and Nathan Horton each had a goal and a helper, while Jay Bouwmeester and Cory Stillman also lit the lamp for the Panthers, who have won three in a row and four of their last five games.
Tomas Vokoun turned aside 28-of-32 shots for Florida and improved to 7-6-1 in his career versus Atlanta.
Todd White had a goal and two assists for Atlanta, which was unable to feed off an impressive 4-0 win at New Jersey on Thursday night. The Thrashers have dropped seven of their last nine.
Erik Christensen, Ilya Kovalchuk and Colby Armstrong added markers for Atlanta, while Kari Lehtonen stopped only 20-of-27 shots before being replaced by Johan Hedberg, who allowed a goal on two shots.
With the score even at 3-3 after two periods of play, the Panthers wasted little time jumping on Atlanta in the third.
Peltonen put Florida ahead at 1:34 when the veteran winger took a pass from Dvorak in the left wing corner and ripped a wrist shot high over Lehtonen's glove hand from the low left slot to make it a 4-3 game.
Florida struck again just 1:08 later when Frolik led a line rush down the right wing boards and centered to Stillman, who fired home a wrister from the slot to increase the lead to two.
Booth's 18th of the season at 7:05 and Peltonen's second of the contest a little under five minutes later made it a 7-3 game.
Kovalchuk's wrister from the high slot off a faceoff with 6:35 to play got the Thrashers to within three, but Horton's marker 1 1/2 minutes later accounted for the final margin.
Florida opened the scoring at 9:50 of the first stanza on a penalty shot goal by Frolik. After Niclas Havelid hooked the rookie center from behind while on a breakaway, Frolik faked a backhander and went to the forehand, beating Lehtonen over the pad to the stick side.
Armstrong tied things at 1-1 three minutes later when he batted home Slava Kozlov's rebound for this 12th goal of the season.
With 1:36 left in the opening frame and Florida skating with an extra man from a delayed penalty call, Bouwmeester's slap shot from the right point got through for a 2-1 lead.
Dvorak's shorthanded tally with 11 ticks remaining in the period put the Panthers ahead by a pair heading into the first intermission.
In the second stanza, White's power-play marker at 3:53 got the Thrashers within one and Christensen deadlocked things at 16:26 on a nice pass from White along the left wing boards.
Florida will host Philadelphia on Friday night, while the Thrashers welcome Ottawa to Atlanta on Wednesday...Florida has now won two of three against Atlanta this season and have captured seven of its last nine against the Thrashers...Gregory Campbell finished with three assists for the Panthers.
