NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at NY Rangers
(Monday, March 30th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 3, New Jersey 0
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist stopped 38 shots to post his third shutout of season as the New York Rangers topped the New Jersey Devils, 3-0, at Madison Square Garden.
Brandon Dubinsky, Dan Girardi and Ryan Callahan tallied second period goals for the Rangers, who halted a two-game slide and moved within a point of sixth-place Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
"When you lose you try to learn from it and when you win you try to enjoy it and move on," said Lundqvist. "It was a good game and a good feeling tonight. They're a pretty solid team and if you give them things to work with they'll kill you, but we didn't give them that chance to come back at us."
Martin Brodeur made 34 saves in defeat for the Devils, who suffered their fifth straight loss but still hold the third-seed in the East and first place in the Atlantic Division with 98 points.
"We aren't playing like we need to play at this time of the season," said New Jersey coach Brent Sutter. "We didn't have any good shots tonight and the first two periods we played really soft. Players seem to have gotten into a comfort zone and now we're paying the price."
The Rangers launched 20 shots at Brodeur in the first period but failed to score. Finally, on their 26th shot, 4:35 into the second, Dubinsky lifted the puck over the fallen Devils netminder to break the scoreless tie.
In a 4-on-4 situation, Girardi slipped a wrister through traffic and inside the left post at 6:39 for a 2-0 Rangers advantage, then Callahan extended the New York edge to three on a high wrister off a Scott Gomez feed with 4:54 left in the period.
Lundqvist made sure the lead held up, turning aside 19 New Jersey shots.
He followed up with nine saves in the third period, including a sliding stop against the right post on a Brian Gionta chance on a Devils' power-play late in the contest.
