NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Boston
(Saturday, January 10th)
Final Score: Boston 5, Carolina 1
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Michael Ryder scored twice as the Boston Bruins downed the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-1, at TD Banknorth Garden.
David Krejci had a goal and two assists while Mark Stuart added a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who have won their last two games. Tim Thomas stopped 29 shots in the win.
"We thought that they were going to come out really hard," said Boston coach Claude Julien, who on Saturday was named as the coach for the Eastern Conference in the upcoming All-Star game. "It's a team that's pretty gritty, pretty intense. So I think it was important for us to come out strong. When your team is executing well it makes the other team maybe not look as good. If we had been a little sloppy tonight they probably would have looked a lot better."
Justin Williams scored the lone goal in the loss for the Hurricanes, who have dropped two straight after a four-game winning streak. Cam Ward started in net, but was pulled after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Michael Leighton finished the game between the pipes and allowed two goals on 20 shots.
"We have to be better in little areas," said Williams. "We didn't work hard in front of the net on both ends today, offensively and defensively. We were too soft. They did what they wanted to with us."
The Bruins struck first on the power play. Blake Wheeler received a pass in his own end and slammed on the brakes at the left circle. He sent the puck to the slot where a flying Krejci received it and lifted a backhander past Ward at the 7:55 mark of the first.
Later in the frame, Boston took a 2-0 lead as Stephane Yelle tipped in a Stuart left point shot for his sixth goal of the season with 2:39 left.
Boston blew the game open in the second period with three goals in the stanza.
The first came at the 3:27 mark of the frame as a Carolina player swept away a centering pass, but the puck went to the left circle where Stuart grabbed it and fired a shot on net that hit off a Carolina player and got past Ward.
Ward was pulled from the net in favor of Leighton, but he didn't do much better.
About four minutes after the Stuart goal, Ryder slid a low backhander from the left circle under the pad of Leighton for a 4-0 lead.
With under four minutes to play, Krejci grabbed a rebound in front of the net and sent a behind-the-back pass to Ryder, who tapped it into the open net for his 17th goal of the season.
The Hurricanes got on the board at the 6:07 mark of the third period as Frantisek Kaberle threw a shot on net from the left point that was deflected out of the air by Williams and trickled past Thomas.
Boston Bruins goaltender Manny Fernandez was scratched from the game due to an undisclosed injury. The team recalled goaltender Tuukka Rask to back up Thomas and also recalled forwards Byron Bitz and Martins Karsums from Providence (AHL)...The Bruins host Montreal on Tuesday...Carolina plays in Ottawa on Tuesday...Boston has won four straight against Carolina...Boston went 1-for-5 on the power play while Carolina finished the game 0-for-3.
