NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Detroit
(Thursday, December 18th)
Final Score: Detroit 6, San Jose 0
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Pavel Datsyuk collected four points with a pair of goals and Ty Conklin stopped all 24 San Jose shots as the Detroit Red Wings handed the Sharks their first regulation loss since November 9 in convincing fashion, 6-0, at Joe Louis Arena.
Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which had lost two of three coming in after starting the month with four straight victories. The Red Wings have won six of their last seven home games and improved to 1-1 on a four-game homestand, with Los Angeles and St. Louis scheduled to close out the residency. Detroit is 10-3-2 overall as the host this season.
The Sharks had a 15-game point streak (12-0-3) snapped and were one game removed from tying the 1929-30 Boston Bruins for most points through the season's first 31 games. San Jose's remarkable run has allowed for an NHL-best 53 points with a 25-4-3 mark this season while the Red Wings are second in the conference with 46 points.
San Jose had won five straight on the road before Wednesday's overtime loss to Columbus and have now lost consecutive games for the second time this season.
Evgeni Nabokov did not look good early on, and gave up a pair of soft goals on the way to allowing six on 28 shots, but the defense didn't help either with two key turnovers leading to immediate Detroit scores in what was billed as a battle between two Western Conference powerhouses.
The Red Wings had the best record in the NHL a season ago, earning 115 points and the top seed on the way to a championship. The Sharks finished second with 108 points.
Nabokov didn't allow a goal until there was 5:29 remaining in the first, but Johan Franzen's fluttering shot from the high slot set the table for fireworks later in the evening. Nabokov appeared to just miss the puck, which was not travelling at a high rate of speed and Datsyuk's first of the night came a little over a minute later, although his was a sweeping, hard wrister that trickled through the five-hole.
Hossa made it a 3-0 affair at the 9:18 mark of the second. Datsyuk intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and set up Hossa high in the slot as Nabokov continued his struggles from that angle with the puck glancing off his blocker and in.
Valtteri Filppula started off the third and made it a 4-0 game with his fifth of the season before Datsyuk pounced on another Sharks' giveaway and snuck a shot under Nabokov's arm with 7:31 remaining.
Brad Stuart capped the barrage with a one-timer from the high slot after Detroit won an offensive zone draw back to Niklas Kronwall at the left point.
