NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Tampa Bay

(Saturday, October 18th)

Final Score: Minnesota 1, Tampa Bay 0 (SO)

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Antti Miettinen's shootout goal was the only puck that found the back of the net and it was good enough to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at St. Pete Times Forum.

Miettinen was the second shooter for Minnesota and he deked to the backhand to beat Mike Smith high for the lead. Highly touted rookie Steven Stamkos had the last opportunity for the Lightning, but Niklas Backstrom made the save for the win.

Backstrom stopped 32 shots and all three shooters in the shootout for his first shutout of the season and 10th of his career for the Wild, who have won all four of their games this season.

Smith made 21 saves and, despite the loss, was credited with his seventh career shutout for the Lightning, who are winless under Barry Melrose, having lost five games to start the season. However, the Lightning have gotten a point in each of their last three games.

Tampa Bay outshot Minnesota, 13-6, in the first period, but Backstrom was up to the challenge as he stopped everything thrown his way, as did Smith.

Each side had eight shots in the second period, but both of the goaltenders stymied the offenses.

Backstrom was again strong in the third period as he made 10 saves, while his counterpart, Smith, need to stop just four shots to force overtime.

Both sides had opportunities to win in overtime, and Minnesota ended the extra frame on the power play, but the goaltenders made the saves they needed to and the game went to the shootout.
