NHL Game Summary - Florida at Toronto
(Tuesday, January 6th)
Final Score: Florida 4, Toronto 2
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Tomas Vokoun made 24 saves to help the Florida Panthers to a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre.
Stephen Weiss, Gregory Campbell and Ville Peltonen each had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, who have won two of their last three. Michael Frolik also lit the lamp in the win.
"We rely on goaltending and defense for us to stay in hockey games," said Weiss. "Tonight we had both of those and some scoring to go with it."
Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jason Blake each had a goal for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped two of three. Vesa Toskala gave up four goals on 34 shots.
"It's not what they were doing, it's what we weren't doing," said Ponikarovsky. "We couldn't get the puck out of our end, we were tired and kept turning pucks over."
The Panthers had an earlier goal taken away, but took a 1-0 lead at the 10:16 mark of the first period on the power play as Weiss' wrist shot from the right circle found its way past the glove of Toskala.
Florida took a 2-0 lead with 2:22 to play in the first when Campbell sent a behind the back pass from the low left side to the right circle for Peltonen, who one-timed it home.
Frolik's eighth goal of the season with 5:42 to play in the second period gave Florida a 3-0 lead.
Toronto got on the board at the 4:43 mark of the third thanks to a power-play goal from Ponikarovsky.
Florida, though, answered on the power play as Jay Bouwmeester's slap shot from the right point was tipped into the net by Campbell with 9:40 to play.
Blake's short-handed tally made it a two-goal game with 7:51 left in the game. He skated in on the breakaway and threw a shot on net that was stopped. However, Blake was able to bang home his own rebound.
Toronto, though, was unable to cut into its deficit any further as Florida held on for the win.
