NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at Tampa Bay

(Saturday, March 21st)

Final Score: Atlanta 4, Tampa Bay 3 (SO)

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Slava Kozlov scored the first goal of the game and netted the winner in the shootout, as Atlanta edged Tampa Bay, 4-3, at St. Pete Times Forum.

After the first three shooters in the extra segment were turned away, Kozlov fired a wrister past the stick side of Karri Ramo. The Lightning needed Martin St. Louis to score or the game would end. And St. Louis tried too many fakes before firing a shot off the body of Johan Hedberg.

Kozlov, Todd White, and Ilya Kovalchuk each tallied a goal and an assist for the Thrashers, who snapped a two-game losing steak. Hedberg made 26 saves for Atlanta, which improved to 6-1 in shootouts this year.

"It seems like he (Kozlov) is growing within our system still," said Atlanta head coach John Anderson.

Steven Stamkos lit the lamp twice, while Vaclav Prospal had the other goal for the Lightning, who have dropped three in a row -- two coming in shootouts. Ramo turned aside 33 shots for Tampa Bay, which fell to 3-10 this season in shootouts.

The Lightning went 2-for-5 on the power play.

"The power play is clicking right now, were finally getting comfortable with each other," said Stamkos.

The Thrashers dominated the Lightning in the first period, scoring two goals on 19 shots. Kozlov got Atlanta started with his 22nd goal of the year at the 6:12 mark. White's power-play goal with 2:11 left in the frame put the home team ahead 2-0.

Tampa Bay managed just seven shots during the first 20 minutes of play.

The Lightning, though, responded by scoring three times in the second stanza. Stamkos lit the lamp at 3:50 and found the net again at 5:12 mark.

Kovalchuk's slap shot beat Ramo stick side with 7:08 left to put Atlanta back in front, 3-2. But Prospal tied the game with 4:24 remaining. Prospal took a cross-ice pass from Lukas Krajicek before firing a shot into an open left side of the net.

Game Notes

The Thrashers have won three of the five meetings between the teams this year and nine of the last 11 encounters overall...Tobias Enstrom collected two assists for Atlanta.
