NHL Game Summary - Florida at Vancouver
(Sunday, December 14th)
Final Score: Vancouver 5, Florida 3
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Pavol Demitra scored twice and the Vancouver Canucks erased a two-goal deficit with five consecutive scores to down the Florida Panthers by a 5-3 final at General Motors Place.
Ryan Kesler had a goal and an assist while Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Hordichuk also scored for Vancouver, which had dropped six of eight coming into Sunday having just ended its longest road trip of the season 2-4-1.
Cory Schneider allowed three goals on 21 shots to get the win. The Canucks kicked off a four-game homestand with the win and are now 8-3-1 at GM Place this year.
Jay Bouwmeester, Nick Boynton and Michael Frolik got the goals for Florida, which saw its three-game wining streak come to an end. Craig Anderson was victimized for five goals on 30 shots in the loss.
Florida also suffered its first defeat on a five-game road trip, which will end Thursday at Carolina, and had a five-game road winning streak halted as well.
Florida came out with two quick goals, from Boynton at 4:02 of the first and Bouwmeester's rebound in front nearly three minutes later.
The Canucks, though, started their comeback late in the first on a goal from Hordichuk with 7:18 left in the period. Kesler picked off an errant pass from the Panthers, slid the disc across the slot into the right circle for Hordichuk, who sent a wrister past Anderson.
Vancouver then took control with four straight second-period goals to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Demitra notched his ninth and 10th goals of the season back-to-back to open the barrage -- the second of which came on a power play.
Wellwood's tally came 1 1/2 minutes later, also on the power play, and Kesler capped the period with a short-handed marker with 6:35 left in the frame -- just 38 seconds after the previous tally.
Frolik was able to get one by Schneider 6:14 into the third for a 5-3 game but the netminder turned away Florida's eight other shots in the third to preserve the win.
The Panthers are now 8-9-1 as the visiting club this season...Florida was 0- for-5 on the power play while Vancouver scored twice in six chances with the man-advantage.
