NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Calgary
(Wednesday, March 18th)
Final Score: Calgary 2, Dallas 1
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Eric Nystrom notched the game-winner in the third period as Calgary edged Dallas, 2-1, at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Jamie Lundmark also scored for the Flames, who posted a victory in their first home game following a seven-game road trip which saw the club go 3-4-0.
Miikka Kiprusoff posted his 41st win of the season by making 18 stops.
"We focused on the good things, got back to basics and that was the key to the game, said Nystrom. "We give up one goal and score one more than the other guys. That's what it comes down to."
Brendan Morrison had the lone tally for the Stars, who have dropped the first two contests in their three-game road trip which ends on Saturday in San Jose.
Marty Turco stopped 29 shots but suffered his second loss in as many starts.
Nystrom gave Calgary a 2-1 lead with 8:14 left in regulation. Dustin Boyd used a one-handed feed to keep a puck in the Dallas zone at the blue line and flip it ahead to the winger, who broke down the right side and slid the disc through Turco's pads.
The Stars wasted a power-play chance with 5:34 to play as the Flames were whistled for a bench minor, then couldn't get an equalizer with an extra skater inside the final minute.
"We didn't do ourselves any favors. We've got a lot of work to do," admitted Turco. "We need goals, better play from the defense and we certainly need better goaltending from me. We're running out of things to say and do. We need to start throwing the hammer down."
Morrison opened the scoring 1:10 into the second period, backhanding a shot from the slot over Kiprusoff's glove, then Lundmark one-touched a Daymond Langkow lead pass from the right side at 5:39 for a power-play marker.
It was only Nystrom's fourth goal of the season and first since February 14...The Stars returned to Calgary for the first time since December 2, when former Star forward Sean Avery made inappropriate pre-game remarks about the girlfriend of Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf...Calgary hosts St. Louis on Friday.
