NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Ottawa
(Thursday, November 6th)
Final Score: Ottawa 4, Philadelphia 1
Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Jesse Winchester finished with his first career goal and an assist to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Scotiabank Place.
Dany Heatley, Anton Volchenkov and Chris Neil each tallied once for the Senators, who have won four of five. Alex Auld made 17 saves in the win.
Arron Asham had the lone goal for the Flyers, who have lost two in a row after a four-game win streak. Philadelphia has allowed nine goals in the two games after allowing just seven during the win streak.
Antero Niittymaki allowed three goals on 24 shots in the loss.
Ottawa had a goal waved off early in the first period. The puck bounced off the end boards and caromed off the skate of Antoine Vermette into the net. But the play was reviewed and nullified after it was determined Vermette employed a kicking motion.
Nevertheless, Ottawa took the lead shortly thereafter. Volchenkov's blast from above the right circle beat Niittymaki at 8:49 for a 1-0 Senators lead.
Heatley made it 2-0 with a power-play goal with 7:18 remaining in the first. A feed from behind the net from Jason Spezza found Heatley near the crease, and he swiped it into the right side of the net.
Asham got the Flyers back within one, though, at the 7:18 mark of the second frame. He picked the puck out of a mass of players in the left circle and fired off a wrister past Auld while falling down.
But Ottawa scored 56 seconds later to steal the momentum back. Winchester was the recipient of a centering pass from Daniel Alfredsson. He skated through the slot virtually unimpeded, took the pass and put the puck past Niittymaki.
An empty-net goal by Neil with 1:41 remaining in regulation sealed the win.
It was Asham's first goal since February 16 of last season, when he was with New Jersey...The Senators play at Carolina on Friday...Philadelphia hosts Tampa Bay on Saturday.
