NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Anaheim
(Wednesday, February 11th)
Final Score: Anaheim 3, Calgary 2 (OT)
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Scott Niedermayer's second goal of the game came 55 seconds into overtime, as the Anaheim Ducks pulled out a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames.
Brendan Morrison also scored for the Ducks, who beat the Flames in back-to- back contests, having taken a 2-1 win over Calgary on Saturday. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 21 stops in the win.
Todd Bertuzzi and Curtis Glencross scored the goals for Calgary, which beat Montreal on Monday between losses to the Ducks. The victory over the Canadiens is also the Flames' only win in their last six games (1-4-1).
Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was bombarded with 40 shots, and he turned aside 37 of them.
The game was chippy, as the teams accumulated 15 penalties, four of them for fighting. They got into a scrum at the end of the third period, and Anaheim's Chris Kunitz and Calgary's Cory Sarich were each assessed a roughing minor, making the first two minutes of overtime 3-on-3.
The Ducks took advantage of the wide-open ice, as Niedermayer and teammate Todd Marchant exchanged the puck on a give-and-go in the Flames' end. Marchant got the disc from Niedermayer, held for a moment and fed the puck back into the right circle. Niedermayer extended and swatted a backhander on net, which went up and over Kiprusoff's shoulder and in the net by the right post for the game-winner.
Bertuzzi got the Flames on the scoreboard just 2:55 into the game, and Calgary held the 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. But with 9:30 left in the second on the power play, Niedermayer got a rebound on the right side and slid it between Kiprusoff's pads to even the game.
Glencross made it a 2-1 Flames lead with 5:43 left in the middle period, though Morrison made it a tie game shortly into the third. Getzlaf fought off a defender along the left boards while handling the puck and sent a backhanded pass to Morrison, who fired the puck past Kiprusoff at 2:05.
Calgary went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Anaheim was 1-for-5...Steve Montador had two assists for the Ducks...Anaheim has won five of the last six with Calgary, and took the season series, 3-1-0.
