NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Anaheim
(Sunday, November 2nd)
Final Score: Anaheim 3, Calgary 2
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and assist and Jean- Sebastien Giguere made 34 saves to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames at the Honda Center.
Chris Pronger and Ryan Carter also scored for the Ducks, who had a five-game winning streak halted on Friday. Giguere rebounded nicely after getting yanked in Friday's 7-6 shootout loss to Vancouver when he allowed four goals on 13 shots while Getzlaf extended his points streak to six straight games.
The Ducks have now won eight consecutive games against the Flames when they visit Anaheim.
"This game was better all-around," Giguere said. "This is our team. We need to get more comfortable with the lead. All-around, a good team effort."
Curtis Glencross and Todd Bertuzzi recorded goals while Jarome Iginla registered two assists for the Flames, who had their six-game winning streak brought to an end.
Miikka Kiprusoff made 34 saves in taking the loss.
The Ducks were poised to reclaim their three-goal lead in the final minute of the second on a shot from Chris Kunitz that escaped the goalie but Corey Perry was whistled for goaltender interference on the play, negating the score and keeping it a two-goal game heading into the third.
The penalty proved to be costly as Calgary cut the lead to one with a power- play tally 1:40 into the final period. Bertuzzi took a pass from Daymond Langkow in the high slot and split two defenders for a clean break on net. Giguere went down and committed to the forehand before Bertuzzi skated across the goal mouth and slid a backhander into the open net.
Kiprusoff did well to keep it that way by stoning the Ducks on two breakaway opportunities in the latter stages of the period but the Flames couldn't convert when Anaheim took a minor with 6:33 remaining and Giguere made several key stops down the stretch.
"We gave them the 3-0 lead.I thought we were going to come all the way back but we didn't," Iginla said. "They're a good team. They have a roll going against us here."
Kunitz gained the blue line along the right boards and threw the disc in front. Kiprusoff made the initial save and stopped two rebound attempts but Getzlaf swooped in to put the puck in the net for the only goal of the first period, 1:46 into the game.
It stayed that way thanks to a great defensive play by rearguard Cory Sarich, who manned the net and used his leg to turn away a potential goal when Kiprusoff sprawled to his right for a save.
The Ducks opened the middle period on the power play and Pronger's wrist shot from just beyond the left circle beat Kiprusoff to the short side two seconds after the penalty expired just 1:23 in.
A Flames turnover in their own zone led to a 3-0 deficit as Carter picked up the loose puck and snapped a shot that was knocked down. A wild scramble in the crease ensued and Carter was able put his own rebound in the net just 45 seconds later.
Calgary got on the board 28 seconds past the midway point when Iginla won a faceoff back to the right point and Adrian Aucoin let fly a shot that was stopped but Glencross was camped in front and put home the rebound.
