NHL Game Summary - Florida at Ottawa

(Monday, December 8th)

Final Score: Florida 4, Ottawa 3 (OT)

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Stephen Weiss scored with just 9.1 seconds remaining in overtime on a slap shot from just inside the blue line to give the Florida Panthers a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place.

The unassisted goal was Weiss' fourth of the year and came on a slap shot that beat Senators goaltender Alex Auld, who made 36 saves in the losing effort.

Craig Anderson stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced to earn the win for Florida and improve his overall record to 7-2-3. Nick Boynton, Michal Repik and Jay Bouwmeester also scored for the Panthers, who improved to 5-1-2 in their last eight games.

Chris Kelly, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza scored for Ottawa, which had a two- game win streak stopped and fell to 4-1-1 in its last six.

The teams traded goals from the beginning, with Ottawa getting on the board first after Kelly scored his second goal of the year off a rebound from a Nick Foligno shot, 7:31 into the first period. Anderson made the initial save, but with Foligno falling into the net, Anderson laid on the ice and was unable to stop Kelly.

Florida came right back just under four minutes later when Boynton took a pass from Ville Peltonen and slid it past Auld for his third goal of the year.

In the second period, the even strength scoring continued, with Heatley notching his 14th goal of the year when he beat Anderson to the right side and scored the unassisted goal to put Ottawa back in the lead, 2-1.

Again, the Panthers came right back and scored just over a minute later when Repik, playing in his first career game, scored on a rebound off a shot by defenseman Keith Ballard.

Spezza gave Ottawa the lead again when he beat Anderson at the 8:20 mark of the middle session off a pass from linemate Daniel Alfredsson.

For the third time on the night, the Panthers responded immediately after giving up a goal, with Bouwmeester scoring on the power play at the 9:58 mark, following an Alexandre Picard hooking penalty just seconds before.

The Senators had an opportunity to retake the lead for the fourth time in the night late in the second period, but they failed to score on a two-man advantage that lasted 1:31.

The teams traded scoring chances in the third period, but were unable to break the tie. Anderson turned aside 15 shots for Florida and Auld made 10 saves for Ottawa.
