NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at New Jersey
(Monday, February 9th)
Final Score: New Jersey 3, NY Rangers 0
Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves to record his first shutout in nearly five years and the third of his career, as the New Jersey Devils defeated the slumping New York Rangers, 3-0, in an Atlantic Division clash at Prudential Center.
Zach Parise scored twice for New Jersey, raising his season total to 32. Washington left wing Alex Ovechkin is pacing the league's marksmen with 37 red lights.
Bobby Holik also found the back of the net, while Jamie Langenbrunner and Travis Zajac both collected two assists for the Devils, who have won 10 of their last 12 contests and sit atop the division with 71 points.
"Most importantly, it's a win," Clemmensen said when asked about the shutout. "Hopefully, we can carry (the level of play) into the next game."
Henrik Lundqvist stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced for the Rangers, who were coming off an embarrassing 10-2 loss in Dallas on Friday and extended their losing streak to five games, a season high.
"We just have to keep plugging away," said Rangers forward Scott Gomez. "It's just a bad stretch at a bad time and we got to get out of it and we will."
Following an uneventful first period, New Jersey tallied twice in a 1:27 span to seize a two-goal lead in the middle frame.
Brendan Shanahan, who spent the past two seasons with the Blueshirts, dumped the puck into the enemy zone. Patrik Elias won the race to the disc and quickly handed off to the veteran Shanahan, whose feed from behind the net was tucked between the pads of Lundqvist by Holik at the eight-minute mark.
Moments later, Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky committed a holding infraction and New Jersey converted on the subsequent man advantage. Lundqvist turned away a point shot by Langenbrunner, but Parise was on the doorstep and the diminutive spark plug jammed in the rebound.
Parise added an empty-netter with 1:43 remaining in the third period to cement the win.
