NHL Game Summary - Florida at Washington
(Saturday, February 7th)
Final Score: Washington 3, Florida 1
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Green scored the tie-breaking goal and empty-net clincher in the third period, as the Washington Capitals notched a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers at Verizon Center.
Eric Fehr also scored for the Capitals, who have won four of five. Jose Theodore stopped 20-of-21 shots in the win. Washington was coming off a 5-4 loss to the Kings on Thursday, which was only the Caps' fourth regulation loss of the season. But with Friday's win, Washington improved to 22-4-1 as the host this season.
"We really needed to get a win tonight to keep our confidence up and our momentum," Green said.
Keith Ballard had the lone goal for Florida, which had a two-game win streak snapped. Tomas Vokoun allowed two goals on 38 shots in the loss.
Fehr got Washington on the board just 33 seconds into the game, on a shot from the right side that beat Vokoun high. But eight minutes later, Florida got the equalizer.
Richard Zednik chased the puck into the Capitals zone to the backboards, then skated behind the net with the disc, emerging on the left side. He shoveled a pass to the slot for Ballard, who blasted the puck past Theodore at 8:35 to make it a 1-1 game.
The contest stayed that way through a scoreless second period, in which Florida had nine shots and Washington had 11.
The Caps went ahead on Green's power-play tally just 43 ticks into the final frame, off an assist from Alex Ovechkin.
"I picked up the puck too late when it was going by me," Vokoun said of the goal. "He just made a good shot. Went right to the top corner. A good player making good plays."
The Panthers had multiple chances to net another equalizer, especially in the final five minutes.
Capitals defenseman Shaone Morrisonn was dealt a five-minute major and game misconduct with 5:01 left, giving Florida a 5-on-3 opportunity, as Sergei Fedorov had already gone to the penalty box for holding with 5:56 remaining.
But Florida couldn't beat Theodore, who withstood the pressure, and Green's empty-netter with 1:13 on the clock sealed the win for Washington.
Florida fell to 12-13-3 on the road this season...Green extended his goal streak to six games...Florida was 0-for-4 on power plays, while Washington went 1-for-4.
