NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at New Jersey

(Friday, February 15th)

Final Score: Atlanta 4, New Jersey 3 (SO)

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Pascal Dupuis scored in the 10th round of the shootout as the Atlanta Thrashers skated past the New Jersey Devils, 4-3, at Prudential Center.

In the 10th round, Dupuis skated in on net and wristed the puck over Martin Brodeur's glove. Arron Asham had the last chance for New Jersey, but his shot went over the net.

"I just sent a shot on net and it got by him," said Dupuis. "That guy (Brodeur) is so good it's hard to figure out how to approach him."

Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist while Todd White and Ilya Kovalchuk each lit the lamp for the Thrashers, who have won three straight. Johan Hedberg stopped 30 shots and eight of the 10 skaters in the shoo tout.

The win pushed Atlanta into a tie for first place with Carolina in the Southeast Division.

"We never quit," said Dupuis. "We played well in the second and got those two goals and that helped us settle down and helped us get the win."

Brian Gionta, Zach Parise and John Madden each scored a goal for the Devils, who had a two-game winning streak stopped. Brodeur finished the game with 29 saves.

"You can always take positives out of a game," said Madden. "But the bottom line is that we didn't get the job done tonight. We just didn't do our job at the end and seal the deal."

With the score tied at 2-2 in the third period, New Jersey grabbed the lead as Madden threw a shot on net from the right side that hit off of Atlanta's Garnet Exelby and got past Hedberg with 11:15 left in the game.

The Thrashers, though, tied the game with just 18.1 seconds to play. Atlanta kept a clearing attempt in and eventually got the puck to the front of the net where Hossa jammed it in for his 26th goal of the season.

"We worked hard tonight and I was just lucky," said Hossa. "The puck came right to me and I had an open net to shoot it into. "

The Devils got on the scoreboard with 2:50 left in the first period as Patrik Elias blasted a one-timer from the slot that Hedberg stopped, but Parise was on the doorstep to sweep in the rebound for his 21st goal of the season.

New Jersey took a 2-0 lead just 3:09 into the second with a power-play goal as Gionta beat Hedberg to the glove side with a slap shot from the top of the left circle.

Atlanta, though, scored the next two goals to tie the game heading into the second intermission.

The Thrashers made it a 2-1 game just 50 seconds after the Gionta goal. Eric Perrin flicked a shot on net from the left circle that Chris Thorburn tipped on goal. Brodeur stopped the puck, but the rebound went out front and Kovalchuk slammed it home for his 40th goal of the season.

Atlanta then tied the game with 8:29 left in the second as Mark Recchi threw the puck out front and White redirected it past Brodeur.
