NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto

(Thursday, February 21st)

Final Score: Buffalo 5, Toronto 1

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Ales Kotalik had a pair of goals as Buffalo surged past Toronto, 5-1, at the Air Canada Centre.

Thomas Vanek extended an impressive offensive stretch with a goal and two assists, while Brian Campbell added a goal and a helper. Derek Roy also scored and Jaroslav Spacek assisted on a pair of tallies as Buffalo won its second straight.

Vanek extended his point streak to four games (six goals, two assists), and has 13 goals in his last 12 games after scoring 13 in his first 49.

"On our power play we've just been trying to get the puck deep," said Vanek. "In practice we've been working on the power play really hard and it's starting to pay off. I put a lot of pressure on myself early in the season. I've just tried to play hard and keep working at it. "

Ryan Miller turned aside 34-of-35 shots in the victory.

Pavel Kubina had the only goal, and Vesa Toskala ended with 18 saves for the Leafs, who had a two-game winning streak halted.

The Sabres came storming out of the gate, and notched the only goal of the first period just 2:36 into the contest. Directly off the faceoff, Campbell took a feed from Spacek and unleashed a one-timer that sailed under the stick of Toskala.

Vanek then lit the lamp on the power play only 59 seconds into the middle stanza, making it 2-0, but Toronto answered back a short time later on the man-advantage, as Kubina notched his fifth of the year.

The Sabres restored their two-goal edge at 8:59, as Kotalik came barreling down the left wing, and sent a soft shot toward the net from the faceoff dot. Toskala misplayed the puck and it glanced off the underside of his glove before sailing over the goal line.

"That was a clear shot," said Toskala. "It went underneath my arm, and I should've had it. I can't be happy. We didn't get the two points. Their guy made a couple of saves and I probably should've made a couple more saves. I thought we played hard, but couldn't put the puck in the net. You just gotta look at the big picture."

Roy made it 4-1 with 5:11 remaining when he rammed home a cross-crease feed by Vanek from the right side. It marked Buffalo's second power-play tally of the night.

Kotalik capped the rout with an empty-net goal with 53 seconds left in the contest.
