NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Philadelphia

(Saturday, February 9th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 2, Philadelphia 0

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Stephen Valiquette made 31 saves to post his second straight shutout against Philadelphia as the New York Rangers downed the Flyers, 2-0, at the Wachovia Center.

Valiquette was in net on January 31 in Philadelphia, the last time these teams met, and posted 20 saves for his first career shutout.

"It wasn't easy but our team played so well," said Valiquette. "We really need to focus on winning at home, though. I felt ready. Preparation before the game is the most important thing for a goaltender. We really need to win games in regulation, that's the most important thing."

Scott Gomez and Nigel Dawes each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

New York has dominated the series between the teams in Philadelphia as the Rangers have won seven straight and 11 of the last 12 games in the City of Brotherly Love. Also, New York has won four of five against Philadelphia this season.

The Rangers now have 62 points and sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Boston.

Martin Biron made 31 save for the Flyers, who have dropped their last two games.

"They make it very tough," said Biron. "They got some power play goals and that was all they needed to win. We gotta look at tomorrow as a big challenge for us, the division is very congested."

Coupled with a win from Pittsburgh on Saturday, Philadelphia now sits in second place in the Atlantic with 65 points. Philadelphia plays the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The Rangers got the only goal of the first period on the power play with 3:25 left in the frame. The puck bounced in front of the net and Biron attempted to poke it away, but he missed and Dawes grabbed the puck and on his second attempt got it into the net.

Philadelphia had eight shots on net in the first period, but Valiquette had an answer for every one of them.

New York then took a 2-0 lead 3:25 into the second period, again on the power play. Gomez received a feed from Fedor Tyutin at the right point, took a stride in and blasted a shot through a screen that beat Biron.

With 7:27 left in the second period, a free-for-all erupted on ice as several players were involved in fights and fighting majors were assigned to three players from each team.

Jeff Carter had a chance to get Philadelphia on the board with about 13 minutes left in the third period as he had a shorthanded breakaway, but the puck slid off his stick as he went to the backhand and he was unable to get the shot off.

The Flyers had a pair of man advantages in the third period, but their top- ranked power play unit was unable to get anything past Valiquette.
