Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta scored within
35 seconds of each other early in the third period, as the New Jersey Devils
scored three times in the third to down the Edmonton Oilers, 3-1.
Both Elias and Gionta had an assist in the third period, and John Madden
sealed the win with an empty-netter. Martin Brodeur stopped 20 shots for the
Devils, who have won two of three.
Joni Pitkanen scored the lone goal for the Oilers, who have lost two in a row
after winning three straight. Mathieu Garon stopped 30 shots for Edmonton.
Pitkanen put the Oilers on top 15:15 into the first period, sweeping in the
rebound of an Ales Hemsky shot to put Edmonton ahead 1-0.
Elias' score, his seventh of the season, tied the game at 1-1 five minutes
into the third period.
Gionta struck 35 seconds later to put the Devils on top. Dainius Zubrus skated
in on net and tried to tuck a shot past Garon, who defended the initial shot,
but Gionta was there for the rebound, and flipped it in for a 2-1 lead.
Madden's empty-netter clinched the win with just 29 seconds left.
Game Notes
Elias now has 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in 12 games against the
Oilers...Edmonton is 1-3-1 in its last five home games.
