NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Boston

(Saturday, December 15th)

Final Score: Boston 2, Columbus 0

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Alex Auld stopped all 32 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season as Boston dumped Columbus, 2-0, at TD Banknorth Garden.

Jeremy Reich and Marco Sturm tallied for the Bruins, winners in four of their last five games.

Fredrik Norrena was the hard luck loser, allowing one goal on 17 shots for the Blue Jackets, losers in three of four.

"It's really a frustrating night," Norrena said. "Usually, when you let in one goal, you have a good chance to win but it doesn't mean anything when you don't score a goal.

Reich gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead 3:20 into the contest, as he took a centering feed and poked it past Norrena from the top of the crease. The play was set up when a wraparound from the left side of the net by Vladimir Sobotka bounced behind the cage to the right side, where Petteri Nokelainen collected it and dished in front.

It was the first goal of the young forward's 61-game NHL career.

"It's a huge monkey off my back," Reich said. "It's been a while, since last year in (AHL) Providence that I scored a goal. I didn't really know what to expect. It kind of went by sort of fast."

Boston had a second goal, coming with 8:17 played in the second period wiped out due to a hooking call on Marc Savard, but held on to their one-goal edge through 40 minutes.

Bruins defenseman Andrew Alberts was called for interference with 2:29 left in regulation, and Sturm narrowly missed tapping home the short-handed clincher off a 2-on-1 rush less than a minute later.

After successfully killing the penalty, Sturm came right back and hit the empty net with 12 seconds to play to seal the win.

"Our goaltender was good and made some key saves at some key times, but we were disappointed that we didn't create a lot of chances on the other goaltender," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien.
