NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at New Jersey

(Saturday, December 15th)

Final Score: Phoenix 4, New Jersey 1

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Martin Hanzal scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center.

Fredrik Sjostrom scored twice and picked up an assist while Mikael Tellqvist made 30 saves for the Coyotes, who have two wins in their last three games.

"Our line played really well the whole game, we tried to get on them quick," said Sjostrom. "This was huge for us. We had the effort and played smarter."

Zach Parise netted his 15th goal of the season for the Devils, who have lost three of their last four. Martin Brodeur surrendered all four goals on 38 shots.

"The difference in the game was one team came to the rink to play a hockey game and the other team came to see what time their reservations for supper were tonight," said New Jersey head coach Brent Sutter.

After a scoreless opening period, the visitors went up 1-0 at 3:32 of the second stanza. From right circle, Hanzal backhanded a pass to a streaking Sjostrom and he one-timed the puck past a sliding Brodeur.

The Coyotes increased their lead to 2-0 just 5:19 into the final frame. Hanzal ripped a wrist shot from the slot and the puck trickled to Radim Vrbata at the left side of the net and he lifted the puck just under the crossbar.

Sjostrom's second tally of the game put Phoenix ahead by three goals at 9:08 of the third. On the power play, Niko Kapanen cranked a slap shot from the right point and Brodeur made a pad save. The rebound, however, kicked out in the slot to Sjostrom and he gathered the disc and backhanded the puck into the net.

The Devils spoiled Tellqvist's bid for a shutout as Parise scored a short- handed tally with six minutes left in the game.

Hanzal's breakaway short-handed goal with 2:50 remaining sealed the victory for the Coyotes.
