NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Carolina

(Wednesday, December 12th)

Final Score: Ottawa 6, Carolina 0

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Dany Heatley scored two goals and picked up an assist to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 6-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center.

Ray Emery and Martin Gerber combined for the shutout for the Senators, who have won three straight. Emery started between the pipes for Ottawa, and had one save before leaving about 5 1/2 minutes into the first period with soreness in his right hip. He was replaced by Gerber, who did not allow a goal on 31 shots fired his way.

"We had good jump and when you score a couple times, it helps," said Ottawa head coach John Paddock. "In the second period, despite the shots being even we had a lot of chances around their net. I thought we had a lot of scoring chances."

Jason Spezza contributed a goal and two helpers in the victory for Ottawa, which has won six of the last eight meetings between the clubs.

Cam Ward allowed all six goals on 26 shots for the Hurricanes, who have lost two in a row and four of six games overall in the month of December.

"It was not good," Carolina head coach Peter Laviolette said about his team's effort. "Every loss is frustrating. When you're embarrassed at home, it's more frustrating, obviously."

Just 1:46 after the game's opening faceoff, Heatley gave the visitors control early with his 15th goal of the season. Spezza centered a pass to Heatley in the slot and he quickly snapped the puck into the top right corner of the net.

Ottawa made it 2-0 at 5:24 of the first after Mike Fisher skated in on goal up the left wing and managed to push the puck past Ward on the short side and over the goal line.

The Senators managed to take a three-goal lead into the first intermission after Spezza tallied with just 51.5 seconds left in the opening period. Spezza took a pass from Randy Robitaille and walked right into the slot and ripped a wrister just under the crossbar.

After a scoreless middle session, Ottawa tacked on three goals in the final frame.

At 8:37 of the third, Shean Donovan took a pass from Dean McAmmond in front and lifted the puck past Ward on his stick side.

Heatley's second goal of the game made it a five-goal contest at 11:52 while McAmmond's first tally of the campaign with 3:43 remaining completed the rout.
