NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at NY Rangers

(Thursday, March 27th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 3, New Jersey 2

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Nigel Dawes notched the game-winning goal with 3:06 remaining in the third, as the New York Rangers rallied to down the New Jersey Devils, 3-2, at Madison Square Garden.

Brendan Shanahan and Christian Backman also tallied for the Rangers, who ran their record to 7-0-0 against the Devils this season. Chris Drury collected three assists and Scott Gomez, who returned after missing Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss to Philadelphia with sprained ribs, added two helpers. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 32-of-34 shots to earn the win.

Patrik Elias and Zach Parise scored for the Devils, who extended their winless streak to five games (0-4-1). Martin Brodeur allowed three goals on 31 shots in defeat.

"We have to find ways to win," Brodeur said.

New York and New Jersey are now tied for the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference with 91 points.

Backman redeemed himself for the costly gaffe that lead to the Devils' late second-period goal, which put them in front, 2-1, with a power-play marker in the early stages of the third period. The defenseman cradled a cross-ice pass from Gomez, took a few strides towards the net and snapped a wrister from the top of the left circle that beat Brodeur high on the short side at 1:38.

The Rangers reclaimed the lead on a fortuitous bounce with 3:06 to go in regulation. Drury tried to feather a pass to Dawes in the slot, but the puck deflected off the skate of Sheldon Brookbank, forcing Brodeur to make a save. The New Jersey goaltender flicked the puck out with the stick, but the disc caromed off the left shoulder of a sliding Dawes, who was pulled down by Travis Zajac and crashed into the crease.

"It was a huge two points," Dawes said. "Good things happen when you go to the net like that."

The Devils pulled Brodeur in the dying moments and peppered Lundqvist, but couldn't net the equalizer.

The Rangers got on the board first courtesy of the power play, as Shanahan broke a nine-game goal-less drought with his 23rd marker of the season. Gomez collected the disc behind the net and spotted Shanahan perched below the left circle. Gomez then threaded a pass that Shanahan banged in on the short side at the 5:21 mark of the second period.

New Jersey scored two unanswered goals and carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

The Devils tied the score at one on a perfect redirection with 8:22 remaining in the middle stanza. Paul Martin, appearing in the 300th game of his NHL career, fired a slap pass from the right point that Elias deflected just inside the near post.

New Jersey then capitalized on a bad giveaway by Backman to take a 2-1 lead. As the Rangers defenseman looked to start a rush from his own zone, Parise intercepted his pass and fired a quick shot high over the glove of a stunned Lundqvist with 1:47 to play.
