NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Los Angeles

(Saturday, December 8th)

Final Score: Phoenix 4, Los Angeles 2

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Keith Ballard scored the game-winning goal with under eight minutes to play as the Phoenix Coyotes downed the Los Angeles Kings, 4-2, at Staples Center.

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist while Fredrik Sjostrom tallied three helpers for the Coyotes, who had lost five of six coming into the game.

Ilya Bryzgalov made 22 saves in the win for Phoenix, which has won all four games against Los Angeles this season, with Bryzgalov in net for all four wins.

"We got a little bit lucky and a little bit fortunate," said Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky. "There wasn't a lot of open ice out there. It was more of an old-fashioned hockey game. It was a hard fought victory."

Michal Handzus and Anze Kopitar each scored a goal while Jean-Sebastien Aubin stopped 18 shots for the Kings, who have lost four of their last five games.

"He made some good saves and some lucky saves," said Kings coach Marc Crawford about Bryzgalov. "One of them bounced off his mask. We have to continue getting to the net and show a little more poise and a little more skill."

With the score tied, Phoenix took the lead with 7:44 left in the game as Doan skated the puck behind the net and from the left boards sent the puck out front to Ballard, who snapped a wrister that beat Aubin.

Doan's empty-net goal in the final moments of the game sealed the win for the Coyotes.

The Kings got the first goal of the game, courtesy of the power play. Dustin Brown had the puck at the left side and sent it on net, where it hit off of Bryzgalov and sat on the doorstep before Kopitar swept it into the net 6:24 in.

However the Coyotes tied the game with just 1:30 left in the first as Ed Jovanovski's shot from the left point was tipped into the net by Mathias Tjarnqvist.

Phoenix took a 2-1 lead just 1:09 into the third with a power-play goal. Martin Hanzal sent a blind, backhand pass from the right side to the left side, where Radim Vrbata pounced on the puck and one-timed it into the net.

Tellqvist needed to make just six saves in the middle frame to help the Coyotes hold the lead.

Los Angeles tied the game at the 10:39 mark of the third period on Handzus' third goal of the season.
