NHL Game Summary - Carolina at NY Islanders

(Monday, January 21st)

Final Score: Carolina 3, NY Islanders 2 (OT)

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Cory Stillman scored a power-play goal 52 seconds into overtime, as the Carolina Hurricanes, who overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period, opened a home-and-home series against the New York Islanders with a 3-2 win at Nassau Coliseum.

These two teams will square off on Tuesday in Raleigh.

New York defenseman Andy Sutton was whistled for cross-checking 37 seconds into the extra session. Eric Staal made a cross-ice pass to Stillman, perched at the right side of the net. Stillman fanned on his first attempt, but whacked the puck past the left pad of Rick DiPietro on his second try.

Mike Commodore and Niclas Wallin tallied for the Hurricanes, who have won two straight following a four-game slide. Cam Ward made 23 saves in the win.

"It was a gross game, the ice was awful, pucks were bouncing everywhere," said Commodore. "You couldn't take your eye off the puck, even if it was laying flat for you because you never knew if it was going to bounce."

Andy Hilbert and Miroslav Satan had the goals for the Islanders, who have dropped two straight and seven of 10 overall. DiPietro finished with 26 saves in defeat.

"I thought we played pretty well," said Islanders coach Ted Nolan. "I thought we played well enough to win."

Down 2-0 after two periods, Carolina got on the board when Commodore's shot from the top of the right circle deflected off the skate of Islanders defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron at the 3:39 mark.

The Hurricanes knotted the game at two with 4:40 to play. Sergei Samsonov dished to the right point, where Wallin unleashed a low slap shot that beat DiPietro through the five-hole.

Following a scoreless opening frame, the Islanders netted two goals in the second.

Freddy Meyer's dump-in from the neutral zone took a fortuitous bounce off the side boards right to Hilbert in the slot. Hilbert charged the net and lifted a backhander past the glove of Ward at 3:17.

New York made it a 2-0 game with 7:03 remaining. Blake Comeau skated down the right wing and dropped the puck to Satan, who walked to the middle of the right circle and snapped a low wrister behind a screened Ward.
