NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Anaheim

(Wednesday, December 5th)

Final Score: Anaheim 4, Buffalo 1

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist to guide the Anaheim Ducks past the Buffalo Sabres, 4-1, at the Honda Center.

Todd Bertuzzi, Corey Perry and Mathieu Schneider also scored for the Ducks, who snapped a modest two-game losing streak. Jean-Sebastien Giguere was strong in net, turning away 22 of the 23 shots he faced

Jochen Hecht had the lone goal for Buffalo, which had won six of seven coming in. Ryan Miller made 29 saves in a losing effort.

"I thought they got kind of fortunate on two of the plays," Miller said. "Point shots ended up going to two of the guys...It's a tighter game otherwise."

The Ducks announced Wednesday that defenseman Scott Niedermayer will rejoin the team for the remainder of the season, though he did not play against Buffalo.

The 34-year-old Niedermayer, who has been skating for the past month, did not join the Ducks for training camp this season because he was contemplating retirement.

"He's made it clear that his commitment to come back now is for this season only," Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. "And I've made it clear that we're not going through this same dance again. If he feels he's going to retire at the end of this season, I'm going to produce those voluntarily retired papers within about two minutes. I respect what Scotty has gone through. This is a warrior and he's a great hockey player and he's earned that right. I don't know if he's earned it twice."

Hecht gave Buffalo the early lead 4:07 into the contest, but the Ducks lashed back with four straight goals.

McDonald evened the score at 1-1 with 4:27 left in the first, and Anaheim scored twice in the middle stanza to move in front.

Schneider struck 12:22 into the second, unleashing a shot from the top of the left circle that beat a screened Miller. Bertuzzi made it 3-1 in the closing moments, chipping McDonald's centering feed into the back of the net.

Perry added a power-play tally in the third to cap the scoring.

Game Notes

The Sabres were 8-0-2 (2 ties) in the last 10 meetings with the Ducks and had won six straight in Anaheim...This was the start of a three-game road swing for Buffalo, which will also visit Los Angeles and San Jose.
