Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Peter Mueller had a goal and two assists as
the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Los Angeles Kings, 4-1, in a Pacific Division
showdown between two struggling clubs.
Steven Reinprecht and Radim Vrbata each had a goal and an assist for Phoenix,
which was coming off a winless four-game road trip that concluded Monday with
a 3-1 defeat in Pittsburgh. The Coyotes scored a total of five goals in that
stretch and came in with a Western Conference-low 60 goals on the season.
Shane Doan also tallied, Nick Boynton had a pair of helpers and Ilja Bryzgalov
made 28 saves in the victory.
Mike Cammalleri had the lone goal for the Kings, who own the worst record in
the West, have lost three straight and are 2-7-2 in the last 11 games. Jean-
Sebastien Aubin stopped 36-of-39 shots in defeat.
The teams battled hard in the first period, with Phoenix opening a two-goal
lead before the Kings answered with a late power-play tally.
Reinprecht got things started when his snap shot found the back of the net
with a little under nine minutes left.
The Coyotes then made it 2-0 when Ed Jovanovski's slapper from just inside the
blue line was turned aside. The rebound kicked out in front though, and was
tapped in by Vrbata with the club skating on the man-advantage with 5:28 left.
The Kings pulled within one on Cammalleri's power-play goal with 2:51 left in
the period, but had their momentum halted in the middle stanza, managing just
Mueller, meanwhile, made it 3-1 when he powered his way toward the crease, and
from just off the left side, put the puck on net and watched it slip past
Aubin at 11:03 in the second period.
Los Angeles tried to hang around, testing Bryzgalov eight times in the third
period. Doan iced the victory for Phoenix however, adding an empty net goal
with 43 seconds remaining.
The Coyotes have scored 23 total goals during a five-game home winning streak
versus Los Angeles...Aubin fell to 1-3 lifetime against Phoenix...Each team
was 1-for-2 on the power play.
